CDs are making a comeback. No, really.

In a pleasing variation on 'vinyl is making a comeback', or even 'cassettes are making a comeback', Discogs have the data to show they believe CDs are on the rise again. Why? Major artists like Taylor Swift and BTS releasing on that format, plus limited editions coming out on CD. And there's more Gen Z and Millenials interesting in physical media.

2022 saw vinyl unit sales surpass CD unit sales for the first time since 1987 (source). Ars Technica reports "Although vinyl unit sales only surpassed CDs last year, revenue from vinyl records has been higher than revenue from CDs for a while now. In 2022, the RIAA says that vinyl albums earned $1.2 billion, compared to $483 million for CDs."

Discogs says "While vinyl has stolen the spotlight for years, another format has been quietly reclaiming its place on collectors' shelves.

"As the numbers of CDs added to the Database and sold in the Marketplace continue to soar, it’s evident that the CD is experiencing a renaissance and solidifying its status as a cherished format for collectors."
