Sad news: Sharon Jones' cancer has returned
Sharon Jones and the Dapkings played in Hamilton, near Toronto on Sept 12, the day after a film about Miss Jones had its world premiere at the Toronto Film festival. Directed by Barbara Kopple, the film 'Miss Sharon Jones' follows Jones's battle with cancer in 2013, now in remission.
But at the concert, Miss Jones told the audience during the song "Get Up and Get Out," that "... she had begun chemotherapy to fight cancer a second time. "I may be in a bit of pain, but it's alright," she said in describing the pins-and-needles feeling in her extremities. "I still got my energy, and I'm going to keep dancing and shouting until this cancer gets out!"(source: Exclaim.ca).
At the movie premiere the previous night, Jones had told the crowd that the cancer was back, but that she hadn't started chemo - “I start chemo on Wednesday. But I’m gonna keep fighting. We got a long way to go.”
She was joined by the members of her longtime backup band, the Dap Kings (Jones and the Kings got their first Grammy nomination last year for the 2014 release “Give the People What They Want”). “It’s a good movie,” deadpanned the bassist-bandleader Gabriel Roth, who said the music in the film “sounded good … [but] we gotta work on a few things...”(source: Indiewire)
