Northern soul is a fascinating phenomenon, especially as its was built on the premise of UK DJs in the North of England finding obscure American soul stompers from the 60s that no other DJ had. The challenge with that is the number of great undiscovered uptempo soul records like that was finite. You were always gonna run out.
One of the DJs even mentions it, saying they had a great run of finding all these amazing records from 1968 to 1974, and by then he was worrying it might end soon. What then? Watch the doco and find out.
As the doco notes, when Granada Television screened a programme about Wigan Casino in 1977, a 20 million UK viewers tuned in and were exposed to northern soul (watch it below). Northern soul was no longer underground.
