Sticks and Shanty were a reggae band from Porirua who released their second album in 1988. My good mate John Pain pulled out his copy this week and found the press release from Jayrem Records inside, which said it was the last record cut and pressed at EMI NZ's pressing plant before it was shuttered in 1987, and shipped off to Australia.
No, the record presses did NOT get dumped in Wellington harbour, as the popular myth goes. Read the story of EMI's plant closure on Audioculture.
It had 'The last cut' inscribed on the runout groove on side two. The mother disc for the stamper for that side two is now housed in the National Library's archives. Their notes say 'Engraved as cut by Roy, Herbie, Tony and Harry 15.9.87.'
