New pressing plant opening in Adelaide

Roundabout's cutting lathe. Photo: CityMag |
Via CityMag: "... The Roundabout recording studio is home to a 1950’s Neumann AM-32 cutting lathe from New Zealand’s old HMV Studios. The last surviving device of its kind, it’s basically the unicorn of record cutting. Vinyl revivalists went into a spin the minute it hit The Secret Society of Lathe Trolls last year. Due purely to proximity, Colin came up trumps.
“I was the first one to get to Auckland,” he says. “A guy jumped on a plane in Germany that night, and a guy jumped on a plane in America that night, and just because I got there first, I was pretty lucky.”
Roundabout are getting ready to set up shop pressing runs of 100-1000 records for local artists, with recording and mastering also offered in-house.
ADDED: From the NZ owner: " I own a Neumann AM32 (circa 1957) cutting lathe that I inherited from my father. It has been in the family since the mid-60's and has been very well cared for.
Since moving it to Auckland in 2002, we did a few test cuts on the machine to ensure it was all working.
I then had to move it into safe storage whilst my work took me overseas. Unfortunately I am never going to get the opportunity to use it again, so I am looking to sell it to a caring new owner.
It has a Grampian Mono cutter head powered by a Philips 80w amp.
I really don't know too many of the other spec's other than it is complete and was working well last time we fired it up."

RIP Prince
Prince has died suddenly aged 57. He played a show in Atlanta last week, similar to the one he did in Auckland just two months ago, just him, a mic and a piano, and was hospitalised after that show with the flu, but returned home.
"A representative told the celebrity news outlet that the singer had performed in Atlanta even though he was not feeling well and felt worse after boarding the plane for a flight back to Minnesota." (source: RNZ)
I was lucky enough to see him at one of his two his Auckland shows - his first visit to our shores. There was a lot of discussion amongst my music mates about the ticket prices, some folk saying they were too expensive. I just closed my eyes and whacked it on my credit card and figured I'd pay it off - this was a once in a lifetime chance. Who knows when Prince might come back? Now we know the answer, sadly.
I arrived late to Prince - sure,I knew about him, clocked Purple rain, but I didn't connect with his music til I heard 'Kiss' blasting out on a crowded dancefloor (think it was The Brat in Nelson st?) - goddamn, that ish was funky. Then I heard Sign O The Times in the same setting , and Housequake - man, that tune could rock a club. Phenomenal tunes, phenomenal musician and songwriter. Total genius.
Prince was always super quick at getting live clips taken down off the internet, but I still remember seeing a clip of Prince at Madison Square Gardens a few years back, and he had Sharon Jones and the Dapkings open, and Ms Jones and the Dapkings horns joined Prince for one of the encores, doing A Love Bizarre. Damn killed it.
Here's Prince playing and being interviewed by Arsenio Hall, from 2014.

Charles Bradley drops album no 3
Brand new album from the screaming eagle of soul, Mr Charles Bradley.... great slice of modern soul...
E (of Myron and E) - new single 'The Turning Point'
"Mocambo Records proudly presents the first 45 with the unmistakable E (aka Eric 'E da Boss' Cooke, and one half of soul duo Myron & E out on Timmion Records and Stones Throw).
This new single, titled "The Turning Point" is a dramatic piece of soul with dope drums and a cinematic orchestration, which sees E and his female duet partner Ishtar ‘breaking up’, while the flipside features the instrumental version.
This is a vinyl only release, available in limited quantities and as a first taste of the collaboration between E and Mocambo Records."

Kings Arms for the chop?
The latest announcement of Special Housing Areas by the Auckland Council include 59 France St. The clever folk at Cheese On Toast spotted that's the current location of legendary Auckland live venue, the Kings Arms. Based on the Council's website, it sounds likely to be demolished and replaced by apartments:
According to the Auckland Council website:
“The development at 59 France Street South is for approximately 60 new apartments over 3 years. The affordable homes within the development will be priced at between $450,000 and $675,000.
The apartment development will also provide a mix of housing types, matched to current shortages, including smaller one-bedroom units and larger two-bedroom units.
The land is currently occupied by a two level commercial building and car park. It is zoned Mixed Use under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan, which was notified on 30 September 2013.
Urban Collective are pleased to be included in an SHA noting that there is an intention to have the first residential housing ready for habitation by 2019, with the entire development completed by 2019.”
A quick search reveals Urban Collective as property developers, specialising in high end developments.
UPDATED: Russell Brown at Public Address reports that "According to records, the building at 59 France Street, Newton, is owned by the same people who have owned it since 1993: James Sclater, Susan DeGuara and Maureen Patricia Gordon – aka Maureen from the King’s Arms. They are also the shareholders in the King’s Arms business, PG Gordon Limited."
Brown also reports that an apparently knowledgeable source says: "Maureen has no intention to sell at this point. The council can’t do sh*t as she owns the land outright … Maureen’s furious at the council."
Brown also says that "One theory is that the developer may have applied for SHA status to increase the value of the property to pressure a sale."
So it appears Urban Collective's intention to build apartments on that site may not be clear cut. The SHA mentioned covers two titles, the Kings Arms, and the nearby gym.
UPDATE 2: Brown has done some further digging: "I checked the title on the other two properties in the SHA, 11 and 13 Karaka Street.
