Luck of the Irish
Listen to this... Eek-a-Mouse celebrating his 50th birthday in a pub in Cork, singing with a trad Irish pub band. Dodgy sound quality, but if you ever wondered what Jamaican reggae singing would sound like over Irish pub bands, here's your answer.

"for those that aren't familiar with the irish trad scene it basically comes in two flavours, one being watered down 'trad hits' usually found in temple bar in dublin and other tourist spots and the other a free for all who are musically minded to sit in the corner and drink & play whatever instrument you can, usually fiddles, pipes, whistles spoon etc.. the later being the rowdier and far more fun variety, and it was the Sine in Cork city, a particularly (in)famous trad pub that we found ourselves continuing eek's 50th birthday celebrations downing the black stuff from lunchtime till close.

here is a 6 minute recording... "

Bombs over Baghdad
Now, what does it say about TVNZ, when their news bulletin editor would rather take his chances working for a TV station that GW Bush has allegedly wanted bombed off the face of the planet, instead of staying with our state broadcaster?

"TVNZ has lost another senior member of its news production team. Paul Yurisich resigned yesterday for a job with Middle Eastern television network Al Jazeera in Doha. In October, Mr Yurisich was appointed as news bulletin editor after news executive producer Melanie Jones was sacked." - NZ Herald.

What does it say? Probably that despite what every pundit, columnist and blogger spouting off about a something they know fuck all about, that TVNZ News and Current Affairs MAY just have staff that are in it for the job.

The opportunity to work for Al Jazeera's [yet to start English speaking] channel, is one that many genuine truth seakers would jump at.
It's much like saying 'what does it say about bFM that a staff member would want to go and work at the BBC?!'
Says more about the pundits if you ask me...

What was that about a media beat up, peter? ;)

Ah Hugh, got a rise out of you then...
Good points, and of course Al Jazeera's english language channel has also attracted folk like David Frost.

nice call on the media beatup.

"It's much like saying 'what does it say about bFM that a staff member would want to go and work at the BBC?!'"
Well Hugh, last time I checked, US troops hadn't accidentally bombed any of the BBC's offices. And all those pundits and bloggers mouthing off, well, remember that TVNZ is owned by the people, hence everyone's got an opinion (and not necessarily a knowledgable one, as you point out). TV3 doesnt have the same problem. And of course there are good people working at TVNZ, like yourself!

by the way, can i use 'genuine truth seekers' as a song title for my next album?

You sure did, one can only handle bullshit being heaped on them for so long. Trust me - no one here wants the news to be the news, but everyone else clearly does.

Of course not. but given the press coverage of that al jazeera affair, and Bush being on the back foot, I'd suggest Al Jazeera would be a safer place to be than BBC these days! Lightning doesn't strike twice yada yada yada...
The 'point' is that your tongue in cheek connection between getting a dream job, and leaving a supposed death star, is irrelevant. Much like those journalists comments about hip hop that worried you so....

Yip, TVNZ is owned by the people. So is NZ Post, but I'll guess 'the people' know fuck all about running a postal service too.

People bitch about TVNZ cause the average person hates TV wankers. The print-press amplify those bitchings to the people because they hate TV too. We pay better.

Has the Heralds "premium content" fuckup been on the front page of the Herald for days on end?

They don't seem to mind when they jump ship and come and work here though. Hmmm, bizarre.

And finally, returning to the state owned angle, and let me make this clear to anyone reading, TVNZ is not just TVNZ News and Current Affairs. TVNZ News and Current Affairs is funded TOTALLY from commercial revenue of TVNZ. You don't pay for Judy, you don't pay for my credit card, you don't pay for Suze either.
In fact, the government pays for less than 10 percent of what it costs to run TVNZ. AND, TVNZ pays the government an annual dividend!
So tell me again who exactly is being shafted?

And yip - go for your life re: album tittle, but i think I could come up with better ones given more time....

Hugh - I said song title , not album title, just to clarify. Already got that one sorted, thanks, but of course any suggestions welcome!!!
Thanks for your comments... Cheers.
