eMusic's new deal with Sony is bad news for NZ users

And here's why, thanks to Radioscope's Paul Kennedy.

"Popular US-based music subscription site eMusic is to close the door on New Zealand users.

An eMusic spokesperson tells us existing New Zealand customers will continue to be able to use the service, as they "grandfathered" under the current US subscription plans. However, they will soon stop accepting new customers from New Zealand (or anywhere else outside the US, Canada or EU)...

American users faced with price increases will at least be getting access to a raft of new repertoire thanks to the Sony deal. Canadian, British and EU customers won't immediately get the Sony tracks, but their music prices are being maintained. New Zealanders get the worst end of both deals - no new content but increased prices nonetheless.

Smoking Cubans.

"The most eminent stars of Cuban hip-hop take some time to join the country's up and coming talent on this track from the Revolution album which drops next week, produced by Poet Name Life of the Black Eyed Peas.

The Revolution project unites several of the most promising musicians Winfield and Yoshizaki encountered (including members of Cuban groups like Sexto Sentido and AnĂ³nimo Consejo) with producers like Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), Rich File (UNKLE), Poet Name Life (Black Eyed Peas), Guy Sigsworth (Bjork), Marius De Vries (Sugarcubes), and Cameron McVey & Jan Kybert (Massive Attack) for an album which unites Cuban musical tradition with Western production techniques and styles. Guests on the album include Roisin Murphy, Orishas, Lateef The Truthspeaker & more. "
