Drinking Guiness at 8 in the morning is not a good idea
I got invited up to BFM by me ol mate Wallace this morning, to talk about mashups, and drink Guiness for St Patricks Day. Now I'm feeling rather fuddled. He also got me to rattle of my top five NZ singles for a BFM competition. One caller phoned in his list too, which included Shihad -Stations, HLAH - Fish across face and Hallelujah Picassos - Rewind, which was cool to hear.
Anyways, here's mine...

Satuday night stay at home - Suburban Reptiles (Wallace claimed to have never heard it, and promptly got booed - I nearly left in disgust)
Beat rhythm fashion - Turn of the century
Upper Hutt Posse - E Tu (was also considering their Stormy Weather 12")
Fat Freddy's Drop - Midnight marauders
Newmatics - Broadcast OR

Was chatting to one of the Irish musos that Wallace had up in the studio playing tunes, about Beat Rhythm Fashion - they released three single and disappeared - he told me that the two brothers behind BRF (Dan and Nino Birch) ended up in Melbourne, playing in a band called Barry Plankton. So, what's your top five fave NZ singles? Hit me up in comments....

ADDED: Failsafe Records are reissuing a heap of BRF material, download Turn of the century over here...

Body Electric—Pulsing
Toy Love—Pull Down the Shades
JPSE—Breathe
Ardijah—My Love is Blind
Split Enz—I See Red

So many singles that it takes some time to think. I chose the above not as my favorite NZ singles but because they were among the first to come into my head that actuallt charted.

Totally agree that Fish Across Face and Rewind are classic NZ singles. Still remember serving coffee to both HLAH and HPs backstage at Strawberry Fields, Raglan circa 1994. Bobbylon was definitely uptight that day.

I reckon The Warners were capable of some hit singles. Never happened I think.

By the way, I remember when Wallace was a metal freak in Dunedin before he discovered funk. What an amazing transformation.

Cheers
Jim

Was it BRF that sung 'No Great Oaks'? I had that single until some prick stole it. There was another song that I always loved by the same band.. not sure of the title, but the main chorusline was 'dunno what I'm doing but I know I'm gonna do it again' ..if anyone can put me on to a copy of that I'll be extremely grateful.. particularly if it's in MP3 or CD format since I don't have a turntable anymore.

There's was another band too I kinda liked that just came to mind.. Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth.

in no particular order ...
(& not neccessarily official singles)

rotor plus - 'middle - thinking of changing the rectangle to a less regular shape'
tall dwarfs - 'turning brown & torn in two'
nelsh bailter space - 'new man'
the clean - 'point that thing'
the mutton birds - 'the queens engrish'

oh i can still remember seeing nelsh bailter space play live!
with hamish kilgour on drums they were fantastic!

Hey Demonsurfer, that other BRF song you're thinking of is called Beings Rest Finally. Should be on their reissue cd when it comes out. Also, Young Marble Giants - that album got reissued last year on cd, look out for it.
Jim, you were at Strawberry Fields aye? I recall that was a weird gig, remember it being a bit low key, or maybe the crowd just didn't like us??!!
